  • Description

EXTENSIVE FLOODING HAS DEVASTATED LARGE AREAS OF EAST PAKISTAN, KILLING 49 PEOPLE AND CAUSING SERIOUS DAMAGE TO PROPERTY, CROPS AND CATTLE.

ONE OF THE HARDEST HIT AREAS WAS COMILLA, WHERE THE RIVER GUMATI BURST ITS BANKS THREE MILES (4.8 KMS) OUTSIDE THE TOWN. OUTLYING DISTRICTS WERE INUNDATED.

AT ONE TIME THE RIVER WAS FIVE FEET (1.6 METERS) ABOVE DANGER LEVEL. DISRUPTION WAS MADE WORSE WHEN 15 OF THE 21 POLICE STATIONS IN THE AREA WERE PUT OF ACTION BECAUSE OF THE SWIRLING FLOOD WATERS.

CIVIL AUTHORITIES TRIED TO EVACUATE THOSE WHO HAD LOST THEIR HOMES. MOST HAD TO LEAVE WITH ONLY THE SCANTIEST OF BELONGINGS. THE FLOODING IS THE WORST TO HIT EAST PAKISTAN SINCE 1964 AND AT ONE STAGE CHITTAGONG, THE GATEWAY TO EAST PAKISTAN, WAS CUT OFF.

THOSE THAT DIED WERE EITHER DROWNED OR BURIED IN LANDSLIDES AND HOUSE COLLAPSES.

THE CROP LOSSES ARE DESCRIBED AS "COLOSSAL."
