  • Description

Brazilian Emerson Fittipaldi, driving a Lotus, won the fifth round of the European Formula Two motor-racing series at Crystal Palace in south London on Monday.

Australian Tim Schenken was second in a Brabham and Sweden's Ronnie Peterson was third in a March.

Fittipaldi, as a graded Grand Prix driver, was not eligible for points in the European Trophy series, so Schenken was awarded the maximum nine points for being second in the 50-lap race.

We apologise for the scratch which impairs the first part of this film.

SYNOPSIS: There was a strong field of top international drivers at Crystal Palace in London on Monday for the fifth round of the European Formula Two motor-racing series.

The Lotus of Emerson Fittipaldi, 24-year-old Brazilian Grand Prix driver, took the lead on the second of the 50 laps, and was chased for most of the race by the Swede Ronnie Peterson in a March.

But pre-race favourite Peterson was unable to maintain the lucky run which took him to second place in last Sunday's Monaco Formula One Grand Prix.

On the second-last lap Peterson slid off the track, and allowed Australian Tim Schenken in a Brabham to slip through for second place.

But it was Brazilian Fittipaldi who held off all challenges to take the chequered flag, the laurels and the trophy, at an average speed of just over 99 miles per hour (159 KPH).
