Picasso, who died aged 91 in April, joined the Communist party in 1945. Although Spanish by birth, he chose to live in exile in France after the Spanish Civil War because of his opposition to Franco's regime.

The paintings on exhibition covered most periods of his long and prolific career. Several were loaned by galleries in the Soviet Union and some of these had never been shown in France before.

SYNOPSIS: The French Communist party paid tribute to Pablo Picasso last week when, along with the French periodical l'Humanite, it staged an exhibition of his paintings near Paris.

Many of the paintings, including this one, were lent by galleries in the Soviet Union.

The little house in a garden was painted between 1908 and 1910 and belongs to Picasso's Cubist period.

Picasso, although Spanish by birth, lived in France most of his life and was a member of the French Communist Party.

The Torero playing a guitar - a distinctively Cubist work - was lent by a gallery in Czechoslovakia.

Picasso began experimenting with Cubism in 1906. This painting - woman at eventide - and his others of this period represented an entirely new approach to art. he painted what he know, not just what the eye could see.

Several of Picasso's more recent paintings were loaned by French collections. Woman with a cat was painted in 1964 when Picasso was in his eighties and still producing about 200 works a year.

This painting - called simply "woman squatting" was also loaned by French collection.

Picasso, who died in April, aged 91, was prolific throughout his career. Experts estimated he produced about 13,000 pictures during his life. "Woman in a necklace" was painted five years ago. The exhibition was the first major one of Picasso's work since the artist died.
