    Yesterday (Wednesday) India presented United Nations Secretary General U Thant with the 100,000 Rupee (about GBP4, 760) Nehru memorial award, recognising what an official citation called his patient quest for world peace. The award, founded in memory of the late Prime Minister, was presented by President Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan.

    The Secretary-General is currently on a five-nation Asian tour. He is the first man to be honoured by the Nehru Award which will be presented each year for "outstanding contribution to the promotion of international understanding, goodwill and friendship among peoples of the world".

    Accepting the award, U Thant said to foster international co-operation "our understanding of each other must therefore include respect for the person and respect for the culture of society he represents.
