The new stadium in Buenos Aires was filled to capacity with 80,000 spectators. Local athletes put on a mass display to herald the opening of the 1978 World Cup. The sixteen flags of the competing nations were formed to represent the rays of sun in this section of the display.

In all, the display lasted an hour. In the game that followed, a Group Two clash, The Champions West Germany met Poland, who came third in the last championships. David Coleman of the BBC takes up the commentary.

"Good ball by Beer to Abramczik back to Beer, and almost on cue from Bobby Charlton then the Germans came to life. Fischer's come to mark him but he seems dwarfed. Deyna...everybody looking for a cross and he completely surprised the whole German defence and probably the crowd as well. But Maier good enough. Flohe, Abramczik, Flohe. Tomaszewski trying to get that attack moving quickly. Bit of a misunderstanding in the German defence, there's Lubanski, Szarmach and the miskick almost found Lato. Wawalka, Maculewicz, Lubanski laid on for Deyna... good play by the captain and good goalkeeping by Maier. Masztaler for Poland. Deyna he got caught. But Deyna with the free kick for Poland just outside the penalty area. He nearly found Szarmach who had stolen up on the outside."

Every opening match of the World Cup Finals since 1962 has ended in a goalless draw.
