    Saudi Arabia's first resident Ambassador to the Philippines presented his credentials to the Philippines' President Marcos in a simple ceremony at Manila's Malacanang Ceremonial Hall on December 7.

    The Ambassador is Sheik Aquil Mohamed Aquil. When presenting his credentials, Sheik Aquil said that through Saudi Arabia's policy of Islamic solidarity, King Faisal sought to open the way for further contacts and more understanding with Christians.

    In reply, President Marcos said the Philippines believed strongly int he principle of peaceful co-existence, regardless of differences in race or belief. The President said the Philippines had a strong and vigorous Muslim minority.

    SYNOPSIS: Saudi Arabia's first Ambassador to the Philippines, Sheik Aquil Mohamed Aquil, has presented his credentials to President Marcos in a simple ceremony in Manila.

    In presenting his credentials, Sheik Aquil said the policy of Islamic solidarity could open the way for further contacts and understanding with the Christian community. In his address to the Philippines President, the Sheik also pointed out the trend towards internationalism and reiterated the Islamic policy of avoiding international strife. He said that Islam sought the fraternity of mankind and peace and friendship among nations.

    In his reply, President Marcos said the Philippines was a strong supporter of the United Nations and believed in the principle of peaceful co-existence, regardless of differences in race or belief. He said that it was the Philippines' desire to strengthen the cordial relations which existed with Saudi Arabia.

    President Marcos pointed out that the Philippines had a strong Muslim minority. He said the Muslim community in his country was a source of pride. In another ceremony the same day, President Marcos accepted the credential of a new ambassador from Lebanon, another Muslim country.
