Background: 50,000 spectators crowded into Ullevi Stadium, Gothenburg, July 17, to see the struggle for the European Speedway Championship.
Expert riders from six European countries were competing for the title of Champion in a match of 20 heats, and there was great excitement among the spectators as the riders flashed round the circuit.
At the end of the twentieth heat it was found that No.12, Ove Fundin of Sweden and No.4 Josef Hofmeister of Germany were level on points, and an extra race had to be run between them.
In this, Ove Fundin, who won the World speedway title in 1956, beat Josef Hofmeister to become 1959 European Champion - Hofmeister was runner-up and Mietzyslaw Polukard of Poland, third.
At a previous meeting in Munich, Hofmeister was the winner, so now all eyes will be on Wembley Stadium - September 19 - when racing for the World Championship will be held there.
Ullevi Stadium originally built to stage top class football matches was completed in 1957 at a cost of 33 million kroner.
