Background: The Democratic Front for the Liberation of palestine (DFLP) called a news conference in Beirut on Wednesday (2 June) to condemn the intervention of the Syrian armed forces in the Lebanon crisis.
The DFLP spokesman, Mr. Yasser Rabbo, speaking in Arabic told journalists that Syrian armed intervention would greatly complicate the finding of a political solution to the crisis.
Mr. Rabbo said that the intervention came at a time when "national and progressive forces" -- representing the Moslem leftists and the Palestinians -- were ready for political agreement with the "other side" -- the Christian Falangists.
Mr. Rabbo declared that the DFLP rejected the Syrian action and pledged the Front would oppose any move to liquidate" the national and democratic demand" of the Lebanese people.
The DFLP spokesman warned that the Syrian move might lead to more bloodshed and demanded the Syrian government withdraw its forces from Lebanon soil at once. Mr. Rabbo said that such a move would open the way for a political solution to the crisis.
According the Reuters the Syrian army has halted in north and east Lebanon. The Syrian forces were apparently awaiting the outcome of further political developments between the various Lebanese factions. By late Friday (4 June), there were no reports of any Syrian troop movements.
Meanwhile, Egypt has condemned the intervention and called for a meeting of Arab foreign ministers to discuss the Syrian action and the Lebanese crisis. The attack, sent in a diplomatic note to the Cairo offices of the Arab League, was one of the strongest yet by Egypt against Syria. And, reuters quoted Egyptian government officials, as saying that relations between the two allies against israel has reached a new low.
