  • Description

Throughout Spain people are checking recently published electoral rolls to make sure they will be able to vote in general elections scheduled for later this year.

SYNOPSIS: Already, posters line many streets throughout the country as political parties seek votes for the elections which must be held before 30 June. The electoral rolls are being displayed at town halls throughout Spain, and the scene at the Madrid Town Hall was typical of many localities. People were keen to check that they had the right to vote in the forthcoming poll, the first democratic elections in Spain since the end of the Civil war in 1939.

So far, nearly 90 political parties have been legalized to take part in the elections. About 80 more, including the Communist Party, have registered with the Interior Ministry and await decision on the granting on full legal status.

The government is expected to complete the country's new electoral law next week. This will determine how many deputies each province will have in the 350-seat lower house of Parliament, and decide party access to the State-run radio and television networks.
