An automatic receiver for satellite pictures--a powerful aid in meteorology--was donated to the Ivory Coast government of Friday (January 14th). Handing over the gift from his government, Belgian Ambassador M. Gerard Walravens said he was sure the receiver would enable the Ivorians to make more accurate weather forecasts. The gift was received by Ivorian Public Works and Transport Minister, M. Grah Kadji.

SYNOPSIS: At Abidjan Airport, an automatic receiver for satellite pictures has recently been installed. On Friday, Ivorian Public Works and Transport Minister, M. Grah Kadji, arrived for the official handover of the new unit. Automatic transmission of pictures from weather satellites should allow for a big improvement in weather forecasting in the Ivory Coast.

The belgian Ambassador, M. Gerard Walravens, made the official Presentation of the receiver--a gift from this government. The receivers, he said, was a proof of the friendship between the two countries. It would also prove an invaluable contribution to international aircraft safety by improving the accuracy of weather forecasting.

Minister Kadji said the unit would receive pictures covering a radius of three thousand kilometres (eighteen hundred miles) around Abidjan--an area extending from the Northern Sahara down to the Tropic of Capricorn.
