  • Description

An intensive training programme is underway in Juba, headquarters of the Southern Command of the Sudan Armed Forces to integrate about six thousand men into the forces.

The men are some of the twenty five thousand strong Anyanya supporters who are being successfully trained to fit into the new civilian and government structure in Sudan. Six thousand are in the army, three thousand in the police and prison systems, six thousand have been absorbed into the civil administration, while another ten thousand have become farmers.

When the seventeen year old war between southern Anyanya and the central sudanese government formerly ended in 1972 with the Addis Ababa agreement it was agreed that the southern Command would comprise twelve thousand officers and men. Six thousand of these were former guerillas who were part of the Anyanya army.

Since 1972 an intensive programme has been going on to regroup and train the former guerillas to reach the standard of the sudanese army before they are integrated with the forces. this has now been achieved and all officers in the former Anyanya army have been allowed to retain their bush' ranks. The leader of the Anyanyan men, Major General Joseph Lago, is now one of the most respected officers in the Sudanese army and is the present commander of the southern Command.

In Juba this week there was parade of the integrated troops under the command of Brigadier Abdul Rahman Mohamed.
