  • Description

THE RAND WATER SUPPLY IN SOUTH AFRICA, WHICH SERVES JOHANNESBURG, IS BEING MANAGED BY "KARIBA WEED." THE REED WAS FIRST DISCOVERED N THE VAAL NEAR THE BARRAGE. THE LOCAL WATER BOARD TAKES 250-MILLION GALLONS DAILY FROM THE VAAL TO SUPPLY THE RAND.

THE RAND WATER BOARD DOES NOT KNOW HOW THE WEED ENTERED THE RIVER. PART OF ITS CAMPAIGN TO ERADICATE IT WILL INCLUDE RELEASING MILLIONS OF GALLONS OF WATER UNTIL THE BARRAGE STORAGE IS LOWERED BY AT LEAST TWO FEET. THEN THE EXPOSED WEED WILL BE ATTACKED. THE REDUCED LEVEL WILL BE MAINTAINED FOR AT LEAST FOUR MONTHS
WATER BOARD SPOKESMAN SAID THE WEED SHOULD HAVE BEEN KILLED BY FROST BUT THE REEDS WERE PROTECTING THEM. CHEMICALS, HE ADDED, WOULD BE USED TO DESTROY IT.

THE BARRAGE PILES THE VAAL UP FOR 40 MILES BACK ALONG ITS COURSE.
