Background: THE SULTAN OF BRUNEI, SIR OMAR ALI SAIFUDDIN, CELEBRATED HIS FORTY-EIGHT BIRTHDAY BY OPENING A NEW MOSQUE IN KUALA BELAIT, AT THE EXTREME SOUTH OF HIS TINY STATE.

BRUNEI, WHICH IS UNDER BRITISH PROTECTION, IS PREDOMINANTLY MUSLIM AND IS SITUATED IN NORTHWEST BORNEO. IT IS RICH IN OIL BUT HAS A POPULATION OF ABOUT 85,000 PEOPLE ONLY. IN 1962, IT WAS THE CENTRE OF WORLD NEWS WHEN THERE WAS AN UNSUCCESSFUL REVOLUTION TO OVERTHROW THE SULTAN'S GOVERNMENT.

THE SULTAN ON ARRIVAL AT THE NEW MOSQUE WAS ENTHUSIASTICALLY WELCOMED BY HIS SUBJECTS. AFTER THANKING THEM AND COMMENDING BRITISH SECURITY FORCES IN BRUNEI FOR THEIR PART IN MAINTAINING PEACE SINCE THE REVOLT TWO YEARS AGO, UNVEILED A PLAQUE AND LATER LED THE CONGREGATION IN PRAYERS INSIDE THE MOSQUE.

LATER IN THE DAY, COLOURFUL FLOATS TOOK PART IN A PROCESSION WHICH SHOWED ASPECTS OF THE LIFE OF THE VARIOUS RACES OF BRUNEI. THE SULTAN AND OTHER DIGNITARIES WATCHED FROM A SPECIALLY CONSTRUCTED PAVILION. THE ENTERTAINMENT ENDED WITH A CHINESE LION DANCE.
