    A HEAVY POLICE GUARD KEPT IN THE BACKGROUND AS THE PRESIDENT-MAKING ONE OF HIS FEW PUBLIC APPEARANCES SINCE ESCAPING AN ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT EARLIER THIS MONTH-RECEIVED AN ENTHUSIASTIC RECEPTION FROM THE CROWD.

    DURING THE CELEBRATIONS, PRESIDENT MAKARIOS CONDUCTED A SPECIAL SERVICE AT THE PHANEROMENI CHURCH.

    HE THEN DROVE TO THE HEAVILY GUARDED GREEK EMBASSY TO TAKE THE SALUTE AT THE TRADITIONAL GREEK NATIONAL DAY PARADE. JOINING THE PRESIDENT ON THE REVIEWING STAND WERE GOVERNMENT MINISTERS, HIGH-RANKING MILITARY OFFICERS AND THE GREEK AMBASSADOR, MR. MENELAOS ALEXANDRAKIS.
