Major riots flared up in the Puerto Rico section of Camden, New Jersey, on Friday night (August 20). Thirty-eight fires were started by rioters, causing major damage, and firemen attempting to extinguish the blazes were pelted with rocks and bottles. Several shots were fired by roof-top snipers, and Camden's mayor ordered that firemen should refuse to answer further calls unless police protection was available. Following the order, residents formed bucket brigades to put out house fires, but were mainly unsuccessful. At least 17 houses were totally destroyed, and a state of emergency was declared--putting a halt to the sale of petrol and alcohol. Police moved in during the night, making 180 arrests. Two people were shot and wounded, and 84 others were injured by flying glass and debris.
