  • Description

Inmates in one of Pakistan's main prisons are learning the delicate task of assembling radio and television sets.

In Kot Lakhpat prison, near Lahore, the Pakistan government has introduced a special retraining scheme of especial benefit to shot-term prisoners. In the prison workshops trained engineers and technicians are teaching the men the skills and tricks of installing the intricate electrical wiring of receiving sets.

The prison authorities see the training course as a great step forward in the rehabilitation of prisoners. It also provides a valuable boost for Pakistan's radio and telecommunications industry...and assists the Pakistani economy.

Not all the prisoners, however enjoy the opportunities the retraining programme presents. Kot Lakhpat takes all categories of prisoners, including those under death sentence.

Security is strict. Prison guards have been given orders to shoot to kill should any inmate make a bid for freedom. Even in the prison's well-equipped hospital, no risks are taken. Prisoners deemed particularly dangerous are sometimes chained to bed to prevent escape.
