  • Description

While economic experts were studying the problem of reorganizing OEEC, in Paris, May 24, Transport Ministers of the organization's member countries began a conference at the French capital's Chateau de la Muette, on joint measures to increase road safety.

Received by their French counterpart, M. Buron, the Ministers - including Herr Walbrunner of Austria, Mr Marples of Britain, M. Lindberg of Denmark, Senor Vigon-Suerodiaz, Herr Spubsler of Switzerland, and OEEC's deputy Secretary-General Chitadini- discussed the Channel Tunnel project as well as plans for closer co-operation in road, rail and sea transport.

France alone has six million cars on the road, expected to increase by 10% every year until 1975. In April this year, the United Kingdom produced 120,690 passengers cars, plus 34,416 commercial road vehicles. Road deaths are steadily mounting in most countries, and the feeling is more than justified that a solution of the general traffic problem may more easily be found on an international level, enabling a free exchange of ideas and experiences.

Whilst the experts of the 21 countries are meeting at the Hotel Majestic to study the report made by the "4 Wisemen" on the subject of reorganizing OEEC, the Transport ministers of the member countries are meeting at the Chateau de la Muette so as to decide on joint measures to reinforce security on the roads.

The question of the Channel tunnel will be studied as well a higher degree of cooperation on matters connected with roads, railways and sea transport.

Arrival of Monsieur Lindberg, Danish minister of Transport, followed by Mr. Spuhsler, head of the Swiss Department for Post and Railways, Mr. Marples British minister of Transport, Mr. Walbrunner, Austrian minister of T., Senor Vigon-Suerodiaz, Spanish minister of T. and Mr. Chitadini, deputy-secretary general of OEEC.

On the terrace of the Chateau, the ministers receive Monsieur Buron their French colleague who shakes hands it joins them to be photographed. Various shots of the Ministers.
