  • Description

Forty-eight anglers braved near-gale conditions in the heart of London on Saturday (7 September) in combined fishing competition and scientific experiment.

The competition is designed to find just how many varieties of fish have "found a new home" in London since the Thames River has been cleaned-up. Saturday's event was the seventh organised so far. Results have ranged from zero fish in 1968, through to 352 - the record set in 1972.

Six teams of anglers participated, between Putney and Tower Bridges....and eight-mile (12.8 km) stretch of river. However, they were hampered by poor river conditions caused by low rainfall in the ???per reaches of the river, which have prevailed over the last two years. These conditions resulted in a poor catch last year.

In association with the competition, experts from the Thames Water Authority conducted tests on river water and discovered that on the day, the oxygen content was 76 per cent - that's 16 per cent more than is necessary for the preservation of marine life.

The authority, which has spent something like GPB100 million (approx, 240 million US dollars) in the Thames clean-up campaign, making it one of the cleanest big city rivers in the world, collaborated with the Thames Angling Preservation Society in the competition. The society, founded in 1838, is the world's oldest fishing club.

Three varieties of fish were hocked during the competition on Saturday....reach, bleak and eel.
