  • Description

As Arab fights in Jordan, the Israelis of the Jordan Valley Kibbutzim have enjoyed a breathing space during the past three weeks.

The Israelis remain on the alert, but for once the Arab guns are not directed at the agricultural settlements along the border. At Kibbutz Qvar Rupeen (phonetic spelling), life is normally on a war footing anyway.

The routine at Qvar Rupeen still includes bedding the children down for the night in air-raid shelters.

Meanwhile, cultural pursuits continue despite the war. Some kibbutz dwellers work at ceramics, and other practise Bach far into the night.

The routine assignment that begins the day is the down patrol by the Israeli border guards. Then some time later the settlement's agricultural work begins, and any other work that people need.

While the Jordan war proceeds, these Israelis are preparing for the future by putting up more shell-proof buildings. It seems they expect to have to defend themselves in the near future, despite their present respite.
