Background: DEMONSTRATORS GATHERED IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE, LONDON, THIS AFTERNOON (9 MARCH) IN PROTEST AGAINST UNITED STATES INVOLVEMENT IN THE VIETNAM WAR. THEY HELD A MEETING IN THE SQUARE, THEN MARCHED TO THE SOVIET EMBASSY IN KENSINGTON PALACE GARDENS AND FINALLY DEMONSTRATED OUTSIDE THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY IN GROSVENOR SQUARE. THERE WERE FEW INCIDENTS AND ONLY TWO ARRESTS WERE MADE.

THE MARCHERS MAINLY REPRESENTED THE BRITAIN-VIETNAM SOLIDARITY FRONT, WHICH SUPPORTS THE SOUTH VIETNAM NATIONAL LIBERATION FRONT. AS SPEAKERS ADDRESSED THEM IN TRAFALGAR SQUARE THERE WERE INTERRUPTIONS FROM NATIONAL FRONT MEMBERS WHO WAVED THE BRITISH FLAG, JEERED THE DEMONSTRATORS AND SHOUTED "REDS OUT", "SUPPORT OUR POLICE" AND "BOMB VIET CONG".

THERE WAS FURTHER HECKLING FROM YOUNG COMMUNISTS OUTSIDE THE SOVIET EMBASSY WHERE THE MARCHERS FOUND THE EMBASSY ENTRANCE BLOCKED BY LOCKED GATES AND A POLICE CORDON. FOUR DEMONSTRATORS WERE ESCORTED TO THE EMBASSY DOOR BY POLICE. THEY TRIED TO HAND OVER A LETTER PROTESTING AT THE PRESENCE OF SOVIET TROOPS IN CZECHOSLOVAKIA BUT SAID AFTERWARDS THAT SOVIET OFFICIALS HAD REFUSED TO ACCEPT IT.

A SMALLER NUMBER OF DEMONSTRATORS ESTIMATED AT ABOUT 200 WENT ON TO GROSVENOR SQUARE WHERE THEY FOUND THE UNITED STATES EMBASSY PROTECTED BY ABOUT 500 POLICE, SOME OF THEM MOUNTED. THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED ROUND THE SQUARE SHOUTING "LONG LIVE HO CHIN MINH", "VICTORY FOR N.L.F." AND NIXON WE WANT YOU DEAD".

THE DEMONSTRATORS MARCHED OFF AND DISPERSED AFTER HEARING ONE OF THEIR LEADERS SPEAK:
