  • Description

Five African nations held a conference to discuss the crisis of the drought in the Sahel recently.

A special summit meeting was held in Nouakchott, in Mauritania, which was attended by President Leopold Sedar Senghor of Senegal, the President of Mali, Colonel Moussa Traore, the President of Niger, Lieutenant Colonel Seyni Kountche, the President of Gambia, Dawda Jawara, and the President of Mauritania, Moktar Ould Daddah.

The five nations are members of the Inter-State Committee For Combating Drought In the Sahel (CILSS) formed in 1973 after a widespread famine caused by drought in countries bordering the Sahara Desert.

The CILSS now groups together Mali, Niger, Chad, Gambia, Upper Volta, Mauritania, senegal and Cape Verde.

President Daddah of Mauritania was made President of the CILSS at the special meeting, succeeding General Sangoule Lamizana, the President of the Upper Volta.

President Lamizana and the President of Chad, General Felix Malloum, were unable to attend the special meeting because of "pressing national reasons".

President Ould Daddah told the heads of state attending the meeting that it was necessary to strengthen the organisation "at the present moment" to ensure that any new natural disasters in the area could be overcome.
