  • Description

A LONDON FAMILY, WHO HAVE NO HOME OF THEIR OWN, HAVE BEEN LIVING IN A PARKED CAR ON A STREET AT EDMONTON, IN LONDON, SINCE THEY WERE ORDERED OUT OF AN "OVERCROWDED HOME" FIVE WEEKS AGO (ABOUT THE SECOND WEEK OF SEPTEMBER).

THE FAMILY SLEPT UNDER A PILE OF COATS IN THE CAR. THE FATHER, MR. RONALD STENT, SAT IN THE BACK SEAT, HOLDING HIS FOUR YEAR OLD SON, DAVID. THE MOTHER, LILIAN (38) SLEPT BESIDE THEM. THEIR YOUNGEST CHILD, ALAN, SIX MONTHS, LAY IN A COT ON THE FRONT SEATS. THEIR ELDEST SON, AGED 10, STAYED WITH RELATIVES.

THE STENTS WERE EVICTED FROM THEIR HOME IN TOTTENHAM TWO YEARS AGO AND WENT TO LIVE IN A MIDDLESEX COUNTY COUNCIL HOSTEL. THEY HAD TO LEAVE IN MARCH 1962, WHEN IT WAS FOUND THAT MRS STENT HAD A TUBERCULOSIS SPOT ON HER LUNG.

SHE AND THE BOYS WENT TO LIVE WITH HER MOTHER IN AMERSHAM-AVENUE, EDMONTON, UNTIL FIVE WEEKS AGO WHEN THEY HAD TO MOVE OUT BECAUSE THE LOCAL COUNCIL SAID THE HOUSE WAS OVERCROWDED. SO THEY MOVED TO THE CAR OUTSIDE THE MOTHER'S HOME.

FILM SHOWS THE FAMILY LIVING IN THE CAR; THE HOSTEL AT BURNT OAK WHERE THE FAMILY LIVED PREVIOUSLY; AND AN SOF STATEMENT BY MR. STENT.
