AT QUI NHON, SITUATED ON THE COAST ABOUT 275 MILES (480 KMS) NORTH-EAST OF SAIGON, AMERICAN TROOPS WERE BILLETED IN THE VIET TUONG HOTEL. THE EXPLOSION WHICH WRECKED THE BUILDING PROMPTED REPRISAL RAIDS BY AIRCRAFT AGAINST NORTH VIETNAM.

SPECIALIST 4TH CLASS ARTHUR APENDSCHEIN WAS GIVEN AN ACCOUNT OF THE RAIDS DURING HIS 36 HOURS BURIED IN THE DEBRIS OF THE 4-STOREY BUILDING. RESCUE WORKERS WORKED GENTLY YET RAPIDLY TO MAKE A PATH THROUGH TO THE TRAPPED SOLDIER. FINALLY, TWO MONTAGNARD SOLDIERS SMALL ENOUGH TO WORK TOGETHER SQUEEZED THROUGH TO APENDSCHEIN, GREASED HIM WITH SOAP AND HELPED HIM WRIGGLE FREE.

EARLY TODAY (SATURDAY) A TOTAL OF FOUR BODIES HAD BEEN REMOVED. THE TASK OF DISMANTLING AND SORTING THROUGH THE RUBBLE IS EXPECTED TO TAKE THREE OR FOUR DAYS MORE.
