Background: Smuggling between Dubai and India will be the main topic of discussion during a visit by Sheikh Rashid bin Said al-Maktoum, the Vice-President of the Arab Emirates, to India.
The Sheikh -- who is also Ruler of Dubai -- arrived in New Delhi on Saturday (15 June) for a week-long state visit. His programme calls for discussions with Ministers from various Government department.s His wish to visit Agra and see the Taj Mahal and a tour through southern India will also be met.
The main bone of contention between India and the Emirates is smuggling. In recent years Dubai has become a base for smugglers who land in India and carry away contraband Indian silver. It is expected India will ask for Dubai to increase its coastal patrol craft and, in return, will step up its own surveillance.
