  • Description

Soccer...and in Frankfurt, West Germany beat a visiting team from the Soviet Union 1-0 on Wednesday night (8 March). It was another successful test of the team they will take to the Argentine in June to defend the World Cup.

Injuries again prevented West Germany's trainer Helmut Schoen from fielding the strongest team possible for the friendly match. An inflamed knee caused Cologne midfield player Herbert Neumann to pull out of the squad only hours after his selection. Bernd Hoelzenbein of Eintracht, Frankfurt came in to replace him.

The first half of the match was largely dominated by the defences. The Soviet Union in the red shirts, had an especially effective defensive block and pinned down the West German players. Here West Germany's Ruadiger Abramezik narrowly missed scoring after a corner kick.

The Soviet team has made little impact on the international scene recently-partly because of an emphasis on defensive playing. The new Soviet trainer Nikita Simonyan is trying to brighten his team's approach, but recent matches have shown only moderate success as yet. After beating Morocco three-two, the touring Soviet team managed only a goalless draw against a Basque selection in Bilbao and last sunday scored a two-one win over a French team at Poitiers.

The Soviet team's closest chance to score came when Kolotov had the ball in the net. But the referee had already whistled an offside.

After no score in the first half, the West German team turned on their special brand of power play right after the restart.

Germany's only goal came when, after a free kick, Heinz Flohe placed the ball perfectly for unmarked centre-back Rolf Ruessmann to score. It was his first for the national team.

West Germany scored again when Klaus Fischer put the ball in past the helpless keeper Degtyaryov, but the referee disallowed the goal. The final score-a one-nil win for West Germany.
