  • Description

Three new beach hotels, in contrasting styles, now form part of the skyline along Dar es Salaam's Kunduchi Beach. They are the spearhead of the Tanzanian Government's tourist drive.

Until recently development of tourism in Tanzanian was hampered by a lack of good class accommodation. But with natural assets such as 500 miles (800 kilometres) of white, palm fringed beaches and the finest Game Reserve in Africa, the country has launched into a large-scale plan to lure tourists.

Among the three new hotels is the first all fibre-glass hotel in the world where guests will sleep in chalets made from the synthetic material.

SYNOPSIS: The Kunduchi Beach Hotel, Dar es Salaam, is one of three new hotels nearing completion. They are the spearhead of the Tanzanian Government's large-scale plan to attract tourists to the country.

The Bahari Beach Hotel, 15 miles (24 kilometres) north of Dar es Salaam, has been designed in African style, with guests' chalets resembling traditional native huts. A swimming pool is among the other attractions planned to lure visitors to the Southern Tourist Circuit based on the capital.

A unique feature of the third tourist centre -- the Africans Vacation Village -- is that it is the first all fibre-glass hotel in the world. Here guests will sleep in air-conditioned chalets made entirely from the synthetic material. The Village cost 464,000 Sterling and was built by an Israeli firm. Criticism has been levelled at the Government's Tourist policy by young members of the ruling TANU Party who asked if the Tourist Industry was helping to build a Socialist Tanzania. A spokesman at the Ministry of Tourism described the criticism as "healthy". Meanwhile, the building programme goes on.
