Background: Ill-fortune hit yachts and facilities causing thousands of pounds (dollars) worth of damage at Cowes on Tuesday (7 August). Damage to yachts in the fourth Admiral's Cup race arose from collisions and brought several protests.

SYNOPSIS: The United States took the top two positions in the fourth race of the Admirals cup but Australia's Police Car, which came in sixth, was subject to protests and had to be slipped following collisions.

Personality ??? forced Noryema, a Brazilian entry, out of the competition. With Indigo also out with a damaged bow from the collision with Police Car, Brazil's participation in the Admiral's Cup competition was ended. One crew member suffered a broken arm in the crash. Brazil's ill fortune began early in the series with another collision.

This eliminated Madrugada, holed before the first race started. By the end of the fourth race a number of protests were scheduled to be heard.

A Police Car crewman suffered a broken arm after the collision with Indigo, an incident for which the Australians accepted responsibility. They were also subject to protest from two other yachts.

The ill-fortune which affected some of the yachts at sea also struck a marquee set up for Cowes Week. The beer tent was razed when fire swept through it leaving a litter of distorted bottles and cans. Police and fire prevention officers investigated but in the marina, crews of still sound craft prepared for the testing Fastnet race.
