Background: United States Secretary of State Dr. Henry Kissinger is back in Peking this week for a round of intensive, secret talks with Chinese leaders.

Since the first three-hour session on Tuesday (26 November), Dr. Kissinger and his hosts have spent a total of nine hours closeted in meetings. At the first round, the Chinese side was headed by Vice Premier Teng Hsiao-ping. standing in for Premier Chou En-lai who is ill in hospital.

The Untied States side has cautioned that there will be no spectacular results from the present talks. The first round was described as constructive and businesslike. And it was expected that the relations between the two countries and a full range of international issues would be under discussion.

Newsmen in Peking have been reporting that the Chinese are keen to establish full diplomatic relations with Washington. But this is still impeded by the continuing commitment of the United States to Taiwan.

In the absence of concrete news from the talks, journalists have spent much of their time trailing Dr. Kissinger and his wife Nancy on their cultural activities. On Tuesday, these included a visit to the Forbidden City and to a theatre to see a revolutionary opera.
