Background: THOUSANDS OF GREEKS GATHERED YESTERDAY (MONDAY\ IN ARES PARK SQUARE, ATHENS TO DEMONSTRATE IN FAVOUR OF "ENOSIS" FOR CYPRUS. THE RALLY, WHICH RECEIVED GOVERNMENT APPROVAL, FOLLOWED BIG DEMONSTRATION IN TURKISH CITIES DURING THE WEEKEND.

OUTSIDE THE EMBASSIES OF THE UNITED STATES, BRITAIN AND TURKEY, LARGE CONTINGENTS OF POLICE KEPT WATCH IN CASE THE CROWD, INFLAMED BY SPEECHES AT THE RALLY, SHOULD ATTACK THE BUILDINGS.

THE CROWDS HOWEVER REMAINED ORDERLY, APPLAUDING LOUDLY AS SPEAKERS DENOUNCED TURKEY AND THE LONDON AND ZURICH AGREEMENTS (WHICH ESTABLISHED CYPRUS AS AN INDEPENDENT STATE.) POSTERS CARRIED BY THE DEMONSTRATORS CALLED FOR THE REMOVAL OF MILITARY BASES FROM THE ISLAND, AND THE END OF BRITISH AND AMERICAN INTERFERENCE.

(SUPPORT FOR THE DEMONSTRATORS CAME FROM THE OTHER SIDE OF THE MEDITERRANEAN YESTERDAY WHEN PRESIDENT NASSER ASSURED THE CYPRIOT PRESIDENT, ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS, OF EVERY POSSIBLE HELP TO HIS GOVERNMENT IN "ITS EFFORT TO DEFEND ITS COUNTRY AGAINST FOREIGN AGGRESSION".)
