  • Description

Ninety-one people have gone on trial in the Zaire capital of Kinshasa charged with plotting to overthrow President Mobutu Sese Seko.

SYNOPSIS: Among the accused are 24 civilians. All the defendants are charged with high treason and conspiracy against the state. They're said to have plotted a wave of urban violence, including bombings, to unseat the Zaire leader.

The majority of the defendants however, are high-ranking army officers...among them, 12 colonels, 18 majors and 13 captains. One of them, a major, was head of the country's internal security service. He's said to have admitted meeting the Libyan Ambassador in Kinshasa to ask for Libyan aid in overthrowing President Mobutu.

The military court is being presided over by a senior naval officer, Admiral Loponda Wa Botende. As the trial got under way, President Mobutu revealed that 14 people had been executed a month ago for their part in another attempted uprising in the eastern part of the country.

The court was told that the plotters had been planning to mount an attack on President Mobutu's Mont Gnaliema Palace and to serve all communications with the rest of the world while they took control of the country.
