  • Description

Tanganyika's new Government, led by the new Chief Minister, Julius Nyerere, took the prescribed oaths of office before the Governor, Sir Richard Turnbull, at Government House, Dar-es-Salaam, September 3. The Cabinet's formation was announced September 2, only a few hours after the last election results were declared, revealing a landslide victory for Mr. Nyerere's Tanganyika African National Union.

The T.A.N.U., led by Mr. Nyerere since 1954, won an almost unparalleled victory in the elections. It gained just over 100,000 votes in the 13 contested seats; Independents just over 20,000; while the three African National Congress candidates shared only 337 votes between them. Seventy of the seventy-one seats in the Legislative Council will be filled by T.A.N.U. members.

Results of the four-day General Election was a foregone conclusion. 58 T.A.N.U. supporter members of the Legislative Council were returned unopposed. This left only 13 of the 71 seats to be contested.

Six African Ministers, four Europeans, and one Asian form the new Cabinet. Of the elected Ministers, four have held office previously in the Civil Service Government.

Chief Minister Nyerere, 39-year-old former Roman Catholic mission school teacher, is now expected to approach Britain and the United Nations to end their trusteeship, and to fix a date for independence sometime in 1961.
