    POPE PAUL YESTERDAY (TUESDAY) VISITED THE WORLD COUNCIL OF CHURCHES IN A HISTORIC GESTURE OF RECONCILIATION AND DESCRIBED THE OCCASION AS - "A PROPHETIC MOMENT, DAWN OF A DAY TO COME AND YET AWAITED FOR CENTURIES".

    BUT THE POPE, WHO LAST NIGHT RETURNED TO ROME AFTER HIS 12-HOUR VISIT TO PROTESTANT GENEVA, TOLD THE WORLD COUNCIL WHICH GROUPS 234 PROTESTANT AND ORTHODOX CHURCHES - MANY OF THEM SPLIT FROM ROME FOR CENTURIES - THAT THE TIME WAS NOT YET RIPE FOR ROME TO JOIN IT. HE SPOKE OF HIS DESIRE FOR THE RESTORATION OF UNITY AMONG ALL CHRISTIANS AND HIS REGRETS AT THE PRESENT DIVISIONS AMONG THEM.

    HE TOLD THE MEMBERS OF THE WORLD COUNCIL THAT THE QUESTION OF WHETHER THE CATHOLIC CHURCH SHOULD BECOME A MEMBER OF THE COUNCIL RAISED SERIOUS THEOLOGICAL AND PASTORAL IMPLICATIONS AND NEEDED PROFOUND STUDY, BUT HE SAID - "THIS DOES NOT PREVENT US FROM ASSURING YOU OF OUR GREAT RESPECT AND DEEP AFFECTION."
    THE POPE WAS GREETED AT THE WORLD COUNCIL BY ITS GENERAL SECRETARY, DR. EUGENE CARSON BLAKE.

    LATER, POPE PAUL CROSSED LAKE GENEVA IN A MOTOR LAUNCH ON HIS WAY TO CELEBRATE AN OPEN-AIR MASS FOR 50,000 PEOPLE IN THE PARC DE LA GRANGE. IT WAS THE FIRST VISIT TO GENEVA BY A REIGNING PONTIFF FOR OVER 550 YEARS.
