  • Description

SEOUL RIOT POLICE, REPEATEDLY IN ACTION DURING THE WAVE OF POLITICAL UNREST NOW SWEEPING SOUTH KOREAN, YESTERDAY (SATURDAY) QUELLED A DEMONSTRATION BY OPPOSITION LEGISLATORS OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY. ABOUT 40 LEGISLATORS OF THE NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY JOINED PARTY MEMBERS TO PROTEST AGAINST MOVES ALLOWING PRESIDENT CHUNG HEE PARK A THIRD TERM OF OFFICE.

THE LEGISLATORS AND THEIR SUPPORTERS TRIED TO STAGE THE PROTEST OUTSIDE PARTY HEADQUARTERS NEAR THE CAPITOL BUILDING.

BUT AFTER THEY HAD MARCHED ONLY A FEW YARDS, THE DEMONSTRATORS WERE SURROUNDED BY ABOUT 500 POLICE AND WERE FORCED BACK INTO THEIR HEADQUARTERS.

A FEW OF THE ASSEMBLY MEMBERS MANAGED TO SLIP THROUGH THE POLICE CORDON AND MARCHED TOWARDS THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY BUILDING CHANTING "DOWN WITH THE PARK REGIME."
POLICE THEN FIRED TEAR GAS TO BREAK UP THE PROTEST. ABOUT 18 NEW DEMOCRATIC PARTY MEMBERS WERE ARRESTED, BUT MOST WERE LATER RELEASED.

SATURDAY'S DEMONSTRATION CLIMAXED A WEEK OF PROTEST IN SOUTH KOREA. IT FOLLOWED THE CONTROVERSIAL PASSAGE THE PREVIOUS SUNDAY OF A CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT ENABLING PRESIDENT PART TO SEEK A THIRD TERM IN OFFICE.

WHILE THE AMENDMENT WAS BEING SANCTIONED BY 122 PRO-GOVERNMENT LEGISLATORS IN AN ANNEX, OPPOSITION MEMBERS -- UNAWARE OF THE MEETING -- WERE OCCUPYING THE MAIN ASSEMBLY HALL WITH A PROTEST SIT-IN.

DURING THE WEEK, VIOLENT STUDENT DEMONSTRATIONS HAVE LED TO THE CLOSURE OF ALL SOUTH KOREAN UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES. AND OPPOSITION MEMBERS HAVE TWICE STORMED THE OFFICE OF NATIONAL ASSEMBLY SPEAKER HYO-SANG RHEE, WHO HAS SUBSEQUENTLY ACCEPTED RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE PASSING OF SUNDAY'S CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT AND HAS OFFERED HIS RESIGNATION.
