  • Description

Czechoslovak Primate Cardinal Josef Beran, who spent 17 years in Nazi and Communist prisons and died in exile in the Vatican City on Saturday, was buried today (Thursday) alongside former Popes in the crypt of St. Peters Basilica.

In a simple funeral mass in the Basilica, former companions from the Nazi Dachau concentration camp, Czechoslovak pilgrims in costumes, 24 Cardinals and all seven Czechoslovak Bishops paid their tribute to the cardinal.

Pope Paul broke with tradition and entered the Basilica at the end of the ceremony to impart the final absolution and his blessing.

The Pope normally stays away from cardinal's funerals but made this exception to show his particular esteem to the 80 year old Cardinal, considered a stalwart of the Catholic church's spiritual resistance against oppression.
