  • Description

A West German building worker, 31-year-old Franz Burbach, crossed the River Thames in London on Wednesday (August 23) at his second attempt--this time, to promote the publication of a book.

An earlier attempt failed when his balancing pole broke, and he fell into the river to be rescued safely.

During his successful attempt on Wednesday, he shouted protests about the incursion of politics into sport, in reference to the ban on Rhodesian participation in the Olympic Games in Munich, West Germany.
