  • Description

International skaters, including competitors from Britain, France, Germany and U.S.S.R., competed in the 2nd day of the World speed skating championships at Davos, Switzerland, February 7. The events were the 1,500 and 10,000 metre races for men.

Boria Stenin, 25 year old Russian, won the 1,500 metre event in 2 minutes 10.7 seconds and went on to secure the World Speed Skating title for Russia with 186,487 points for the four events. Jan Pesman of Holland won the 10,000 metre race in 16 minutes 53.7 seconds.

Second in the overall placings was Andre Kouprianoff of France with a combined total of 189.245 points.

An East German, H. Kuhnert, won third place in the combined placing for the four results, thus embarrassing officials as Switzerland does not recognise East Germany. Local authorities were ordered not to hoist the East German flag. The International Skating Federation had ordered that the two Germanies should be classed as equal, and that both German flags should be hoisted together. To avoid offence however, it was decided that traditional flag hoisting and end of Championship prize giving should be cancelled.
