Tennis...and the United States beat Sweden four-one in the final on Sunday (18 February) to win the Under-21 team championship in hamburg. In the girl's section, sweden reversed the result, beating the defending U.S. champions three-two.

SYNOPSIS: Here's Mell Purcell of the United States serving to Sweden's Haaken Johansson in their match. Purcell won six-one, six four.

Purcell serving for the first set, and clinching it. He was unbeaten during the tournament, and rated the most promising young player competing.

Second set, and very little was going right for Johansson. In his earlier final match, Purcell had been made to stretch harder by Jan Gunnarson before winning seven-six, six-two.

Purcell had wrapped up the title with that win over Gunnarson. In this match against Johansson, the spur was to get through the tournament unbeaten. He suffered little strain or tension in achieving this aim.

The end in sight - Purcell serving for the match, and winning the crucial point. Purcell's emerging talent and experience at international level, mark him as a Davis Cup prospect for the future. His effort ends with warm congratulations from the United States' coach, Bill Graves.
