    INDIA'S HOME MINISTER, MR. YASHWANTRAO CHAVAN, VISITED RIOT TORN AHMEDABAD YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY) - THE CENTRE OF HINDU-MOSLEM STRIFE IN WHICH AT LEAST 350 PEOPLE DIED. DURING HIS TOUR OF RIOT AREAS, MR. CHAVAN VISITED FORMER DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER MARARJI DESAI, WHO IS ON A HUNGER-STRIKE TO PROTEST AGAINST THE VIOLENCE.

    AFTER SEEING AT FIRST HAND THE RIOT DAMAGE AND SPEAKING TO REFUGEES FROM THE VIOLENCE, MR. CHAVAN SAID THAT HE WOULD NOT BE SURPRISED IF THE FINAL DEATH TOLL EXCEEDED 400.

    HE ADDED THAT THE SITUATION REMAINED TENSE BUT APPEARED TO BE UNDER CONTROL AS TROOPS AND POLICE IMPOSED A BLANKET CURFEW ON THE CITY.

    MR. CHAVAN ESTIMATED THAT ABOUT 10,000 PEOPLE HAD LOST THEIR HOMES IN THE SIX DAYS OF RIOTING, LOOTING AND ARSON.

    DURING HIS TOUR OF THE CITY, MR. CHAVAN VISITED THE JAGANNATH TEMPLE WHERE THE RIOTS BEGAN ON SEPTEMBER 18 AFTER COWS FOR THEM HINDU TEMPLE HAD BEEN DRIVEN THROUGH A MOSLEM AREA OF THE CITY.

    WHEN VISITED BY THE HOME MINISTER, 73-YEAR-OLD MR. DESAI WAS ON THE THIRD DAY OF HIS HUNGER STRIKE - WHICH HE HAS SAID WILL CONTINUE UNTIL THERE IS AN END TO THE VIOLENCE IN AHMEDABAD.
