TENG: "We announce that the Republic of China Olympic Committee cannot accept the proposal put forward by the executive committee of the International Olympic Committee to change the Republic of China name to Taiwan for the duration of the 21st Olympic Games. We consider this change to be improper under IOC rules preventing political discrimination and interference. Since our counter proposal to the IOC to use the name Taiwan IOC was not accepted by the Canadian government, we deeply regret that we have no alternative but to not participate in the Games."

KILLANIN: "In this particular case, it is a matter which is of no concern whatsoever of the International Olympic Committee, who which, in 1972, withdrew recognition for black Africa. And if the New Zealanders and the rugby football people and the South Africans have a row, it is not our concern. We may all have our personal views on the wisdom of it, but we will not get involved in it because it is not our business. Rugby is not an olympic sport and the New Zealand Olympic Committee has not breached our rules, regulations and none of the athletes have had any contact at all with South Africa. And it seems to me extraordinary to bring this political pressure to bear on individual athletes. However, being too busy to watch television and read all the comments, But I understand that there is considerable regret, but I cannot comment on anything else, because we know nothing whatsoever about it other than rom hearsay."

Among the team to pull out because of New Zealand's participation were Algeria, Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, Somalia, Mauritius and Zambia.
