    The Montreal Olympics began on Saturday (17 July) in the absence of Taiwan and about 16 African teams. The Africans boycotted the Games because of New Zealand's rugby tour of South Africa and Taiwan withdrew its team after a political wrangle over what name it should compete under. The leader of the Taiwan delegation, Lawrence Teng, announced the withdrawal.

    SYNOPSIS: The President of the International Olympic Committee, Lord Killanin warned any team or competitor pulling out for political reasons could face strong action from the IOC.
