    SEVERAL THOUSAND BALUBA TRIBESMEN BROKE OUT OF THEIR REFUGEE CAMP IN THE OUTSKIRTS OF ELISABETHVILLE, DEC 20, IN SEARCH OF FOOD. THE BALUBA REFUGEES HAVE BEEN DETAINED IN THE CAMP SINCE AUGUST. THEY ARE AMONG THE STRONGEST OPPONENTS OF THE KATANGA PRESIDENT, MR. TSHOMBE.

    DESPITE STRONG PATROLS OF UNITED NATIONS TROOPS THE REFUGEES ENTERED THE TOWN AND RAISED PRIVATE HOMES AND STORES TAKING WHATEVER THEY COULD CARRY WITH THEM. ONE LARGE BAND WAS DRIVEN FROM A BUTCHER SHOP AFTER SWEDISH AND IRISH TROOPS FIRED INTO THE AIR. SOME OF THEM TOOK POSSESSION OF CYCLES TO WHEEL AWAY THEIR LOOT.

    IT WAS SEVERAL HOURS BEFORE THE UN FORCES COULD DRIVE THE REFUGEES BACK TO THE CAMP. THERE ARE ABOUT 40,000 BALUBA REFUGEES IN THE PROTECTED CAMP,WHERE THEY LIVE IN THE MOST PRIMITIVE CONDITIONS. THEY DEPEND ON THE UNITED NATIONS FOR FOOD AND WATER SUPPLIES.
