  • Description

A former Liberian government official and two army officers are on trail in Liberia for plotting to assassinate President William Tolbert last January.

The three on trial are, Prince Browne, former Assistant Defence Minister for the Coast Guard and former Liberian National Guard Officers Moses Kpardeh and William Saydee. They stand accused of plotting to assassinate President Tolbert while he was inspecting the Anglo-French Concords supersonic airliner. They are also accused of plotting to kill the president's two brothers Finance Minister Stephen Tolbert and Senator Frank Tolbert.

Last Tuesday (5 June) the court heard that the total cost of the plot was ten dollars (four pounds). Laughter greeted the evidence of the star prosecution witness, Colonel John Howard, as he recounted asking Prince Browne for "money for the boys to eat because they are hungry" -- a reference to the Liberian army. Prince Browns gave Colonel Howard ten dollars -- which was the total amount of money laid out for the plot.

The plot misfired because President Tolbert did not attend the reception for the Concords.

The trial, which began on the 22nd of May, is continuing.
