  • Description

Two Witwatersrand University Students staged a protest march yesterday (Monday) against the continued holding of 22 Africans and other people with trial. They were met by a 200-strong force of police as they marched into Vorster Square, Johannesburg. Today (Tuesday), it was learned that 357 students would be charged under the Ritous Assemblies Act.

Student protest marchers were diverted towards police headquarters when, despite a last minute ban, they continued the march. Protest banners were taken by the police. Others were torn up by onlookers.

Many students left the procession as it neared police headquarters. Students leaders said they knew that march was against the law, and would be stopped. Their pertest was not only about the 22 detainees, but all the others who were in detention under Section Six of the Terrorism Act.
