Background: M. Michel Debre the French Prime Minister flew into Algiers today on the start of a three day visit that will include consultations with military and political leaders. "I come in the name of the Government to bring its assurance which I summarise in these words - France will remain in Algeria!"
But on the eve of M. Debre's arrival French settlers at a public meeting in Algiers are reported shouting "Hang Debre", "Debre to the gallows!" and "Down with de Gaulle".
Most of the slogan shouters are believed to belong to near-Fascist groups among the 2,000 French people attending the meeting, sponsored by the "Algeria is French" Movement. They shouted down French deputies who had tried to propagate the goodwill for Algeria of the Fifth Republic.
There are also signs that some of the younger Army officers are 'feeling something less than enchantment at de Gaulle's refusal to make decisive steps towards integration.
