Many stage and film personalities attended the funeral as St. Patrick's Church, Dublin, January 7, of 72-year-old Barry Fitzgerald - a fine actor whose Irish humour and mannerisms had delighted cinema audiences for 25 years.
Mr Fitzgerald - who died in a Dublin hospital Jan 4 after a serious illness - started his career in the city's famous Abbey Theatre, and several of his old colleagues from the theatre were at the service.
He was the son of a journalist, and his real name was William Joseph Shields. In 1937 he went to Hollywood after achieving great successes at the Abbey Theatre. He appeared in over 30 films and won the coveted 'Oscar' film award for his performance in "Going my Way" in 1944.
Barry Fitzgerald was a sick man for along time before he retired from film acting. His last big screen appearance was in "The Catered Affair" in 1956. He was unmarried.
