  • Description

PRESIDENT ETIENNE EDEYEMA OF TOGO VISITED CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE ON WEDNESDAY (JANUARY 29) AFTER ATTENDING THE FOURTH SUMMIT OF THE AFRO-MALAGASY COMMON ORGANISATION (OCAM) IN KINSHASA.

WAITING TO MEET THE TOGOLESE PRESIDENT AT THE QUAYSIDE AS THE FERRYBOAT CROSSED THE CONGO RIVER WERE PRESIDENT MARIEN N'GOUABI AND PRIME MINISTER ALFRED RAOUL.

AFTER BEING GREETED, PRESIDENT EYADEMA JOINED PRESIDENT N'GOUABI AND PRIME MINISTER RAOUL IN THE INSPECTION OF A GUARD OF HONOUR.

EARLIER THIS MONTH, PRESIDENT EYADEMA MET WITH PROTEST DEMONSTRATIONS IN HIS OWN COUNTRY WHEN HE ANNOUNCED THE RESTORATION OF POLITICAL ACTIVITY IN TOGO. THE PRESIDENT HAD BANNED ALL POLITICAL PARTIES WHEN HE CAME TO POWER IN AN ARMY TAKEOVER TWO YEARS AGO, BUT HIS ANNOUNCEMENT EARLY IN JANUARY THAT POLITICIANS COULD PREPARE THEMSELVES TO TAKE PART IN FUTURE PRESIDENTIAL AND LEGISLATIVE ELECTIONS STARTED A COUNTRY-WIDE PROTEST. LATER, PRESIDENT EYADEMA MET TRADITIONAL CHIEFS TO DISCUSS THE POSSIBILITY.

PRESIDENT N'GOUABI ALSO CAME TO POWER IN CONGO-BRAZZAVILLE BY MEANS OF AN ARMY COUP. HE CAME NOMINATED FOR PRESIDENCY BY THE COUNTRY'S RULING NATIONAL COUNCIL OF THE REVOLUTION AT THE BEGINNING OF THIS YEAR FOLLOWING THE COUP LAST SUMMER WHICH TOPPLED THE REGIME OF PRESIDENT ALPHONSE MASSAMBA-DEBAT.
