MR. GHORRAM (LEBANON): "We come to you again Mr. President, as my Syria colleague has mentioned, pressing the Council to condemn Israel......unprovoked attack against The Lebanon and to take all appropriate measures to prevent any further recurrence of these attacks. In our view an action..... immediate action by the Council to request Israel to resist forthwith from all its military operations against Lebanon....will be the kind of action necessary to prevent it from carrying on its continued threats against Lebanon and the neighbouring Arab states. I thank you Mr. President."
MR. ABBY FARAH (SOMALIA): "Now we have no evidence, and we have no assurance now from Israel that it will cease military operations against Lebanon and Syria. What we must ask of this Council is not an appeal, but a demand that all military operations cease immediately......that the utmost of restraint be exercised. Now in making this demand we are not passing judgement. What we are doing is saving lives....because it is a continuing military operation. The Israeli delegate is not here.....he is on holiday. But death does not take a holiday."

Background: United Nations Ambassadors Ghorram of Lebanon and Abby Farah of Somalia urged the Security Council on Sunday (10 September) to heed the demand by Syria that Israel should be ordered to cease the current spate of military attacks against neighbouring Arab states.
But later in Sunday's session, the United States cast its second vote in the history of the Security Council to block the resolution calling for the immediate cessation of military operations in the Middle East.
U.S. Ambassador George Bush said the resolution failed to note that events of the past few days - mainly Israeli attacks against Lebanon and Syria - were directly related to last Tuesday's murder of 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team.
The resolution, said Mr. Bush, thus ignored realities, speaking of one form of violence and not the other.
Our film shows the pleas for action against Israel, firstly by Mr. Ghorram and then by Mr. Abby Farah:-
