    SEOUL, THE SOUTH KOREA CAPITAL, WAS PLACED UNDER ARMY CONTROL TODAY (THURSDAY) TO PREVENT FURTHER OUTBURSTS OF STUDENT DEMONSTRATIONS OVER THE RECENT JAPANESE-KOREAN TREATY.THIS MOVE FOLLOWS FIVE DAYS OF VIOLENT CLASHES AND DEMONSTRATIONS AGAINST THE TREATY, WHICH ESTABLISHED NORMAL RELATIONS BETWEEN THE TWO COUNTRIES.

    DURING WEDNESDAY'S RIOTS, EIGHT THOUSAND STUDENTS FOUGHT WITH 400 TROOPS.FOR THE FIRST TIME, HIGH SCHOOL PUPILS JOINED THEIR UNIVERSITY COLLEAGUES.SOLDIERS USED TEAR GAS AND THEIR GUN STOCKS TO DISPERSE THE STUDENTS.

    LATER NEARLY 200 TROOPS STORMED THROUGH THE UNIVERSITY IN THE CITY ARRESTING SCORES OF STUDENTS.IN A BROADCAST TO THE NATION, PRESIDENT CHUNG HEE PARK SAID HE MIGHT CLOSE DOWN ALL SOUTH KOREAN UNIVERSITIES "SEMI-PERMANENTLY" TO PREVENT FURTHER DEMONSTRATIONS.HE SAID THAT NO FURTHER PROTEST RALLIES, LARGE OR SMALL, WOULD BE TOLERATED.
