  • Description

A BUS STRIKE IN EIRE DRASTICALLY REDUCED THE NUMBER OF PILGRIMS MAKING THEIR ANNUAL PILGRIMAGE UP THE MOUNTAIN KNOWN AS CROAGH PATRICK NEAR WESTPORT COUNTY MAYO. THE PILGRIMAGE STARTED LAST NIGHT (SATURDAY) BUT THE BUSSES WERE NOT OPERATING UNTIL MIDNIGHT AND LESS THAN HALF THE EXPECTED 70,000 PILGRIMS WERE ABLE TO MAKE THE JOURNEY.

THE PILGRIMS MARCH BARE-FOOT UP THE MOUNTAIN ON THE LAST SUNDAY IN JULY EVERY YEAR. AT THE TOP THEY CIRCLE THE STATUE OF ST. PATRICK, HOLDING THEIR ROSARIES AND SAYING PRAYERS AS THEY DO SO. PRIESTS BEGIN MASSES ON THE MOUNTAIN AT FOUR O'CLOCK IN THE MORNING.

THIS YEAR THE PILGRIMAGE WAS MADE IN BAD WEATHER. DESPITE THE BUS-STRIKE THOUSANDS, YOUNG AND OLD, MADE THE CLIMB. A FIRST-AID POST WAS ESTABLISHED HALF WAY UP THE MOUNTAIN TO HELP THOSE WHO FOUND THE GOING TOUGH, AND AN ARMY SIGNALS UNIT WITH WALKIE-TALKIE RADIOS HELPED TO DIRECT THE PILGRIMS.

CROAGH PATRICK IS BELIEVED TO BE IN AREA WHERE ST. PATRICK WAS SHEPHERD WHEN, AS A YOUTH, HE WAS A CAPTIVE OF THE IRISH. HE LATER RETURNED TO BRING CHRISTIANITY TO IRELAND AND BECOME THAT COUNTRY'S PATRON SAINT.
