  • Description

Planners from African Commonwealth countries attending a conference in Kenya on the population drift from rural to urban areas visited the Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology on Saturday (16 February) to see students studying building construction.

The week-long conference, which began on Monday (11 February), is being attended by delegates from 13 Commonwealth countries, and from the Sudan, Ethiopia and Zaire. There are also observers from other African countries and African and international organisations.

The main subjects to be discussed were urban growth in Africa, and the problems of urban employment, housing and management of large cities in Africa.

A senior Kenyan official said urban population was growing at a ???nomenal rate in Africa, and it was important for planners to meet and formulates policies to tackle the resulting social and economic problems.

The curb the drift to the cities, come delegates have suggested that emergency measures be considered along with long-term policies. One labour export said a massive programme of urban rehabilitation was needed to reduce underemployment in towns. He said a great training programme would also be necessary since most of the unemployed had little or no occupational qualification.

The planning conference was told that the proportion of urban dwellers in Africa would increase from an expected 20 per cent in the late 1970's to about 40 per cent towards the end of the century.

The Kiambu Institute of Science and Technology visited by conference delegates is one of thirteen currently being built in Kenya to train middle-level technicians and craftsmen, including building tradesmen.
